Check the markings first. Most belts have their size printed on the back, for example A24, SPZ1000 or 8PK1200. Type that code into the search bar to find the exact match.
Markings worn off? Measure across the top of the belt for the width, and its depth. For the length, wrap a piece of string round the belt, mark where it meets, then lay the string flat and measure it.
Timing or ribbed belt? Count the teeth or ribs, and measure the gap between them.

Gates 6996 Replacement Garden Belt (Megadyne XDV2)
This is the Megadyne XDV2 direct equivalent of Gates 6996, a 5L section lawn and garden V-belt with a 96″ (2438mm) outside length. It’s made by Megadyne, the Italian belt manufacturer, to the same section and length as the Gates belt.
Megadyne XDV2 belts are built for maintenance-free running in hard working conditions. The aramid cords absorb shock loads and keep the length constant, and the CR rubber body resists heat, oil and weather. They suit clutching drives and small pulleys, are static conductive, and work from −20 to +80°C.

Is it a direct equivalent?
Yes. It’s the same 5L section and 96″ outside length as Gates 6996. It’s made and supplied by Megadyne, not Gates, so it carries Megadyne’s markings (XDV58/960) rather than the Gates number.
How do I check it’s the right belt?
Look for Gates 6996 on the old belt or in your parts list. If the markings have worn off, measure round the outside of the belt with a tape: it should be about 2438mm. A worn belt may measure slightly long.
