Measuring Your Belt
Check the markings first. Most belts have their size printed on the back, for example A24, SPZ1000 or 8PK1200. Type that code into the search bar to find the exact match.
Markings worn off? Measure across the top of the belt for the width, and its depth. For the length, wrap a piece of string round the belt, mark where it meets, then lay the string flat and measure it.
Timing or ribbed belt? Count the teeth or ribs, and measure the gap between them.

The Dunlop 5PJ1978 is a PJ-profile ribbed (Poly-V) belt with 5 ribs at a 2.34mm rib pitch, an effective length of 1978mm (77.9″) and an overall width of about 11.7mm.
Dunlop ribbed belts are endless micro V-belts with triangular ribs along their length. Because one belt carries all the power, drives can use smaller pulleys and take up less space than a traditional V-belt drive. They are an economical choice for general drives.

Check it’s the right belt
- The old belt should be marked 5PJ1978 (or 5 PJ 1978, or 5J1978). 5 is the number of ribs, PJ the profile and 1978 the effective length in mm.
- Count the ribs across the underside of the old belt: this one has 5. The second picture shows how to count them.
- Check the rib pitch: PJ ribs are 2.34mm apart. A belt with the wrong profile won’t seat in the pulley grooves.
